A good laser therapist needs to understand what is happening in the skin, not simply which button to press. On this course, you learn how to assess each client, choose safe treatment settings and explain what results are realistic before treatment begins.
The course leads to the VTCT Skills Level 4 Certificate in Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments. Its qualification number is 500/9034/3 and its product code is AB40163. You will complete guided online study, then attend four consecutive days of supervised practical training at our London academy.
The practical work is split across two treatment areas:
The theory explains the choices you make during treatment. It covers Fitzpatrick skin typing, selective photothermolysis, wavelengths, fluence, pulse duration, spot size, cooling systems and the hair growth cycle. You will also learn how to plan a course of treatment, manage contra-actions and give clear aftercare advice.
Every learner completes the same four units:
Safe practice runs through the whole course. You will work with controlled area procedures, protective eyewear, local rules, risk assessments, infection prevention, fire precautions, consent and accurate treatment records.
During your academy days, you will gain supervised experience with clinic systems including the Soprano ICE Platinum for laser hair removal and the Harmony XL Pro for IPL skin rejuvenation. You will practise consultation, skin and hair analysis, patch testing, treatment planning, parameter selection, treatment delivery and aftercare.
You will build evidence through practical observations, assignments, case studies, portfolio work and oral or written questions. Your tutor will assess whether you can plan and carry out treatments safely in a real or realistic working environment.
If you are still deciding whether laser is the right direction for your career, read our laser hair removal therapist career pathway. Our guide to laser hair removal explains the treatment from a client’s point of view.
Laser and IPL training builds on Level 3 knowledge, so you will normally need a relevant regulated Level 3 qualification before you start. Common routes include:
You must be aged 18 or over. You will also need enough spoken and written English to take part in the theory, practical training and assessment.
Qualifications do not always fit a neat template. If you have a medical qualification, overseas certificates, a different Level 3 award or substantial industry experience, send your certificates to our admissions team before you enrol. We will check your eligibility individually. A medical background or work experience does not automatically replace the qualification requirements.
If you do not yet have an eligible Level 3 qualification, compare our aesthetics training routes or ask admissions to help you choose the right starting point.
Once you have completed the NVQ Level 4 Certificate in Laser Hair Removal and IPL, you can explore several exciting opportunities in the aesthetics industry. You can deliver expert laser hair removal and IPL treatments in clinics, salons, or spas, helping clients achieve smooth, hair-free skin. You can also progress to Level 5 Laser Tattoo Removal to enhance your skills and diversify the treatments you can offer, opening up additional career pathways.
You will be required to produce a portfolio of evidence, including assignments, perform practical’s and review case studies. A portfolio will confirm the knowledge, understanding and skills that you have learned.
You’ll train with industry-leading equipment, such as: Alma Soprano ICE, Alma Laser Harmony XL Pro. You will elevate your skills with the best available technologies for laser hair removal and skin rejuvenation.
To become a laser hair removal technician in the UK, you’ll need a relevant Level 3 qualification followed by an Ofqual‑regulated Level 4 laser/IPL course – for a clear, step‑by‑step breakdown of the exact route and entry requirements, read our step-by-step guide to how to become a laser hair removal technician.
In the UK, laser hair removal should only be carried out by appropriately trained and qualified practitioners working under correct insurance and local licensing. In practice, that means therapists with a relevant Level 3 background in beauty/skin, plus an Ofqual‑regulated Level 4 Laser & IPL qualification. Many reputable clinics will only allow practitioners with this level of training to operate medical‑grade laser/IPL devices.
