Choosing an aesthetics course is easier when you start with your current qualifications and the treatments you want to offer. Ray Cochrane Beauty Aesthetics Academy provides classroom-based training in London for complete beginners, qualified beauty therapists and experienced practitioners. Our range includes regulated VTCT qualifications from Levels 2 to 5, along with selected short professional courses.
This page is the main place to compare our aesthetics training routes. Each course page gives the exact entry requirements, course dates, fees and assessment information. If you are unsure whether your existing certificate meets the entry criteria, send it to our admissions team before booking. Experience is valuable, but it does not always replace the units required by an awarding organisation or insurer.
Which aesthetics course is right for me?
The right starting point depends on what you have already studied. A beginner usually needs a recognised facial and skincare foundation before moving into advanced treatments. A qualified therapist may be able to enter at Level 4 or Level 5, provided the qualification and unit requirements are met.

Aesthetics training routes by level
Start with facial and skincare training
Our Level 2 Facial and Skincare course is designed for beginners who need a practical introduction to professional skin treatments. It covers consultation, skin analysis, facial techniques, hygiene and client care. These foundations matter because advanced aesthetics is not simply about learning how to use a device. Practitioners also need to understand contraindications, treatment planning and when not to treat.
Students who want a broader beginner route can compare the Level 3 Access to Aesthetics course with our combined beginner pathway. The best option depends on your previous study and the advanced course you hope to take later.
Build a Level 3 foundation for advanced aesthetics
Level 3 is an important bridge between basic facial training and advanced skin or laser treatments. Our Level 3 Facial Electrical course develops practical knowledge of electrical facial treatments. The Level 3 Access route is intended for students planning a structured progression into aesthetics.
Do not choose a Level 3 course only because its title sounds closest to your goal. Check which units are accepted for the Level 4 qualification you want to study. Our admissions team can help you map the route before you commit to several courses.
Choose between skin rejuvenation and laser training at Level 4
Level 4 is where the pathway becomes more specialised. The Level 4 Certificate in Advanced Aesthetic Therapies for Skin Rejuvenation focuses on chemical skin peeling and skin needling. It suits practitioners who want to develop evidence-based consultation, treatment planning and practical skills for advanced skin services.
The Level 4 Laser and IPL course follows a different professional route. It covers laser hair removal and light-based skin rejuvenation, including safe working practices and practical assessment. Students interested in plasma technology can also review the separate Level 4 Plasma Pen course.
Progress to advanced Level 5 treatments
Our Level 5 Certificate in Non-Surgical Aesthetic Procedures for Skin Rejuvenation is the current regulated route for practitioners who want to develop more advanced skin rejuvenation skills. The programme includes advanced skin needling assessed at Level 6 and mesotherapy study within the wider Level 5 qualification.
During supervised practical training, suitable treatments may include skin needling depths of up to 1.5 mm on the face and up to 2 mm on appropriate body areas. These figures describe upper training parameters, not a default setting for every client. Depth must be selected according to the treatment area, indication, client assessment, device guidance, insurance requirements and the practitioner’s competence.
Laser specialists can follow a different advanced route through the Level 5 Laser Tattoo Removal course. It is not a substitute for the Level 5 skin rejuvenation qualification, and the two courses lead to different treatment services.
Mesotherapy training: the current route
Ray Cochrane previously offered a standalone VTCT Level 6 Mesotherapy course. That course has been retired and is no longer open for new enrolments. Its page may remain available for information about the former qualification, but it should not be treated as a current booking option.
Mesotherapy is now included in our Level 5 Non-Surgical Aesthetic Procedures course, where it is studied as an advanced subject within a broader regulated qualification. Eligible practitioners looking for a shorter, focused option can also review our one-day CPD mesotherapy course. A CPD course is not the same as an Ofqual-regulated qualification, so compare the entry requirements, assessment and intended outcome before choosing.
Regulated qualifications and short courses
Several courses on this page lead to VTCT qualifications regulated by Ofqual in England. A regulated qualification has defined learning outcomes, assessment requirements and a stated level on the Regulated Qualifications Framework. Short CPD or professionally accredited courses can be useful for focused development, but they should not be described as equivalent to a regulated qualification.
Before enrolling, check what your insurer, local authority and prospective employer require for the treatment you plan to offer. Rules and insurance conditions can vary by treatment, location and practitioner background.

Can I take an aesthetics course with no beauty experience?
Yes, but you will normally need to begin with a foundation route rather than an advanced treatment course. Level 2 Facial and Skincare, Level 3 Access to Aesthetics or a suitable combined pathway may be appropriate, depending on your goal.
What is the difference between Level 3, Level 4 and Level 5?
Level 3 establishes the knowledge and practical foundation used for progression. Level 4 introduces specialist advanced treatments such as skin needling, chemical peeling, laser or IPL, depending on the qualification. Level 5 develops more complex treatment planning and advanced practice in a defined area.
Are all courses on this page Ofqual regulated?
No. The page includes regulated VTCT qualifications as well as selected short or CPD courses. Each course page states the qualification or accreditation type. Ask us if you need help checking the distinction.
Can non-medical practitioners study aesthetics?
Yes, non-medical practitioners can follow suitable skin and laser training routes. Entry requirements, treatment scope, local licensing and insurance conditions still apply. Some injectable or medically led procedures have different requirements and are not covered by every aesthetics qualification.
Is the Level 6 Mesotherapy course still available?
No. The standalone Level 6 Mesotherapy course has been retired. Mesotherapy is now included within our Level 5 Non-Surgical Aesthetic Procedures course, and a separate one-day CPD option is available for eligible practitioners.
